In a prosperous family on the outskirts of Erode, the birth of a baby girl named Nandini Khushboo becomes a cause for celebration. The three elder brothers throw a generous feast to mark the occasion, and the local singer’s young son—who had passed away—is brought in to perform a lullaby that soothes the guests. The brothers then decide to raise Nandini as their own, especially since their parents have died, and she grows up surrounded by wealth and guarded reverently by the men in the house.

As Nandini reaches the age of five, an astrologer foresees that she will bring immense happiness to the family, but also that she will marry a person of her own choosing rather than one picked by her brothers. This prophecy unsettles the siblings, who fear losing control over her future. In response, they isolate her, keeping her mostly inside the house and instructing the household to keep other men away, warning that anyone who looks upon her will face severe consequences. The world outside becomes a distant, guarded place for Nandini, a princess kept under lock and key.

Meanwhile, the boy who sang at the feast, Chinna Thambi, grows into a naive, kind-hearted simpleton who lives with his widowed mother Kannamma. He has little schooling and spends his days entertaining the village with song and charm. His genuineness and unpretentious nature quickly earn him a place in the community, even as his mother worries about his future in a harsh world.

The brothers, noticing Thambi’s strength and his easy rapport with people, hire him to be Nandini’s bodyguard and butler. Thambi’s rugged loyalty and protective instinct make him a natural choice, and he begins to earn the family’s grudging respect. Yet Nandini, craving freedom, starts to chafe at the restrictions placed upon her. She convinces Thambi to take her on a private tour of the village, a clandestine outing that the brothers don’t know about. The excursion rekindles a spark between them—Nandini experiences the world beyond the walls, and Thambi is touched by her warmth and vulnerability. When she returns, she falls ill, and Thambi is blamed for her sickness, beaten by the brothers as punishment for what was meant to be a harmless adventure. Nandini’s guilt over his beating deepens the bond between them; she shares her medicine with him, and in that moment, he begins to see her as someone who truly cares for him, not just as a protected charge.

The pair’s growing closeness is interrupted when a factory worker, angered by his own humiliation after attempting to leer at Nandini, hatches a plot to kill her at the factory’s inauguration. Thambi overhears the plan and races to shield Nandini. In a desperate, improvised move, he lunges toward her and, in the chaos, accidentally touches her in public. Although the act is framed as a protective impulse, it becomes a point of no return for the brothers, who explode with rage and nearly beat Thambi to death. Nandini defends him, insisting that Thambi would never act without cause, and the brothers, weighed down by shame, lower their weapons. Thambi, devastated by the violence inflicted on his friend and the woman he has come to care for, resigns on the spot.

That night, Nandini seeks Thambi out to apologize and perhaps plead for his return. Thambi, wary of the family’s volatile temper, refuses to come back, certain that his presence only invites trouble. Yet Nandini gently argues that if Thambi were to marry her, the brothers would be unable to threaten him; she even guides him through a ritual by tying a mangalsutra around his neck. Thambi, missing the ceremonial nuance, accepts the act as a mark of protection rather than a formal marriage, and returns to his duties with a renewed caution and a new, unspoken bond between them. Nandini begins to imitate the ways of her sisters-in-law, adopting a domestic role and caring for her husband, while Thambi becomes acutely aware of the delicate, transformative line between fear, respect, and love.

As the family notices the shift in Nandini’s behavior, they worry about propriety and the prospect of scandal. They push for a proper marriage to prevent any perceived shame from falling on the family. Nandini, realizing they intend to secure an arranged match, tries to explain that she and Thambi are already bound in a form of marriage through that mangalsutra moment, but Thambi remains hesitant and distant, retreating to his mother’s counsel. Kannamma, protective and pragmatic, tries to shield her son by removing him from the situation. She prepares to move him away, hoping to spare him from the family’s conflicts and potential harm.

But the brothers’ cruelty escalates, and Kannamma is subjected to torture as they search for where Thambi has hidden. The danger tightens its grip around the family, and just as all seems bleak, Kannamma’s son intervenes in a fierce reaction, nearly ending the brothers’ threat. The brothers’ wives intervene, pleading for mercy and urging them to protect Nandini rather than destroy the fragile bond forming between Thambi and Nandini. In the wake of the violence, Nandini sinks into despair, with self-destructive thoughts looming large, while Thambi races back to her side to save her.

Thambi’s return proves decisive. He uses his singing—a longtime source of solace for the people around him—to revive Nandini from the brink. Their reunion is tender and powerful: she runs to him, and in that moment of closeness, their bond is reaffirmed. The brothers, having witnessed the depth of their sister’s feelings and Thambi’s unwavering devotion, finally soften and offer their support, allowing the couple to move forward together.

The film closes on a note of cautious happiness, with a strong emphasis on forgiveness, found family, and the idea that true affection can transcend rigid traditions. The two lead characters navigate a landscape of control, misunderstanding, and societal expectations, choosing love and mutual respect as their guiding principles. Through music, resilience, and quiet acts of care, they redefine what it means to belong to a family and to each other.
