In early 17th-century France, as Louis XIII Christian Fourcade comes of age, his mother Marie de Médicis Lise Delamare still rules with her favored minister, Concini—also known as Concino Concini Arnoldo Foà. Concini, aided by his ambitious wife Léonora Dori, later known as Léonora Galigaï Jacqueline Porel, uses ruthless tactics to tighten his grip on the realm, spreading fear across the land and effectively weakening the nobility, especially in the southwest.

Across the court, a circle of highborn lords conspires to overthrow Concini and install the Duke Charles of Angoulême Raphaël Patorni on the throne, bypassing the ordinary line of succession. At the center of this resistance stands François de Capestang Jean Marais, a brave knight who is determined to defend the rightful crown and whom Gisèle d’Angoulême Elsa Martinelli once saved in battle.

François sets out for Paris to present the grievances of his province to the king. Along the way, he meets Cogolin Bourvil, a street performer who becomes a trusted confidant. In the capital, François confronts Concini but refuses to join his corrupt schemes, choosing instead to live as a spy who can uncover crucial information from inside the royal circle.

Cogolin’s bold infiltration into the royal court yields vital intelligence, including news of Gisèle’s whereabouts. With this knowledge, François undertakes a daring mission to rescue Gisèle from captivity and, in the process, also helps shield the king from an assassination attempt, earning Louis XIII’s trust and support.

As betrayals and shifting loyalties reshape the conflict, Béatrice de Beaufort Annie Anderson switches sides after her father’s death, warning François and the conspirators of the coming danger. The climactic battle unfolds at Saint-Leu castle, where François and his allies confront Concini’s forces. They prevail with the timely arrival of the king, turning the tide of the fight.

In the aftermath, old enmities give way to reconciliation: François contemplates his union with Gisèle, and Cogolin’s long-held affection for her is set to be confessed. The king’s reign continues in a new era of unity and stability as Concini falls from power, marking a pivotal shift in the kingdom’s fortunes. Along the way, the Innkeeper of La Pomme d’or Marcel Pérès serves as a quiet witness to the shifting currents of danger and loyalty that thread through Paris and the provinces.
