In 1961, Ray Bahadur Bhupati Roy, Satyam Bhattacharya the King of Ballabhpur village, is deeply in debt, and his only material asset is a crumbling 400-year-old ancestral palace. With mounting obligations pulling him toward Kolkata to open a dental clinic, Bhupati hatches a plan to sell the palace to clear his debts, hoping to salvage his family’s fortune and status. The weight of tradition presses hard on him, and the looming question remains: can a wilted dynasty be turned into a viable future, or will the palace’s memories resist the hands that seek to move on?

To stage a more convincing sale, Bhupati and his loyal butler Monohar rally three local creditors—Saha [Kripabindu Chowdhury], Srinath [Surajit Sarkar], and Paban [Sumanta Roy]—to assist in giving the house a fresh, marketable look. The collaboration is practical, almost ritual, as they scrub and polish the estate, hoping to conjure the aristocratic aura that once defined Ballabhpur’s grandeur. Into this carefully choreographed effort arrives Sanjib Basu, Bhupati’s college friend, [Debraj Bhattacharya], who unexpectedly becomes part of the arrangement by stepping in as the estate’s dewan. Sanjib’s presence adds a layer of camaraderie and an unwelcome flicker of doubt about the true history of the place. His skeptical voice contrasts with Bhupati’s stubborn hope, setting a tonal undertow that will soon surface in the most uncanny ways.

That night, the prospective buyers reappear, and the visitors are not alone. Mr. Haldar returns with his wife Sapna [Jhulan Bhattacharya] and their daughter Chhandaa [Surangana Bandyopadhyay], drawn by the palace’s historic allure and its aristocratic flavor. Chhandaa in particular is instantly drawn to Bhupati, and a mutual, almost magnetic, attraction emerges between the two. The air grows thick with unspoken possibilities as the couple’s forbidden-sounding chemistry tinges the candlelit dinners and hushed conversations with a sense of destiny. Yet beneath the romance there lies a startling confession Bhupati shares with Sanjib: a secret that has haunted him for years. Each night after 11 pm, the ghost of Raghu Da—Raghupati Bhuiyan, Bhupati’s ancestor—wanders the palace. The spirit is trapped there by a curse, and Raghu Da can only lift the curse by compelling the rivals, the descendants of Ballabhpur’s Pratapgarh ruling line, to surrender and apologize. Sanjib, hearing Raghu’s booming, eerie laughter at the stroke of eleven, remains unsettled by the tale, his skepticism slowly giving way to a chill of fear as the ghostly narrative takes on a vivid, almost tangible life.

The next day, Mr. Haldar reappears, this time with a new curiosity and a different angle. Their car breakdown forces another night at the palace, and Bhupati, Sanjib, and Monohar scramble to manage the guests’ stay while navigating the shock of Raghu’s nocturnal visits. Bhupati attempts to calm Raghu, but the ghost’s manic laughter and his sudden recitals of ancient verses—often in Sanskrit—grow more mesmerizing and hypnotic, especially when Raghu’s voice blends with the palace’s echoing halls. Chhandaa becomes entranced by Raghu’s recitations, her fascination deepened as the ghost, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Bhupati, uses poetry from Kalidas and other classic figures to court her imagination. The moment is charged with misperception: Chhandaa mistakes Raghu for Bhupati simply because the two men look alike, and Sapna’s temper flares as she sees Bhupati behaving in a way that seems to betray the estate’s sacred boundaries. Bhupati chooses honesty and accepts responsibility for the misunderstanding, even though he is innocent of any misdeed, which only fuels Sapna’s anger and threatens to derail the deal.

The following morning introduces a new figure into the palace’s unfolding drama: Mr. Chowdhury, a rival and fellow aficionado of grand old houses, who identifies himself as a descendant of the Pratapgarh royals. He ridicules both Mr. Haldar and Bhupati, challenging the very history they cherish. The confrontation escalates quickly, revealing Chowdhury’s pride as well as his vulnerability; he finally kneels and begs forgiveness, recognizing that Raghu’s curse has a bearing on the outcome of their negotiations. In a dramatic turn, Raghu is released from his torment, and the curse appears to loosen its grip on the palace as the rival dissolves into a more conciliatory stance. With the air cleared, Sapna gracefully apologizes and proposes that Chhandaa and Bhupati marry, a proposal both of them accept with a sense of relieved acceptance rather than simple romance.

As the dust settles, the once-divided intentions of the inhabitants begin to merge into a single, hopeful path forward. The wedding of Chhandaa and Bhupati marks a new chapter for Ballabhpur’s lineage, a blending of old aristocratic charm with new beginnings. Yet the palatial walls still carry Raghu’s echo; his voice returns one last time, a spectral reminder that the palace’s history cannot be erased, only reconciled. In the end, the couple speaks softly about life ahead, aware that the past has shaped them in ways they are only just beginning to understand, and that every step into the future will be watched, in a way, by Raghu Da’s lingering presence. The film closes on a note of tempered optimism, where love, legacies, and legends interweave to create a future that respects the past while stepping toward a new dawn.
