What Is Another Evil About?

The premise of Another Evil in 316 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.

A quiet cabin in the woods sets the stage for a retreat that promises solitude and creative focus for painter Dan Papadakis. Accompanied by his family, Dan hopes to find inspiration away from the pressures of daily life, trading city noise for the stillness of dense forest. The woods carry their own rhythms, and the rustic home offers a sense of refuge — at least until strange, unexplainable occurrences begin to unsettle the household’s fragile peace.

As unsettling sounds and shifting shadows disrupt the family’s routines, the Papadakises reach out for outside help. A laid-back visitor named Joey offers a casual perspective on the disturbances, leaving Dan unconvinced and searching for a more decisive solution. The recommendation of a friend leads Dan to Os, a demonologist whose reputation suggests he can tackle what others cannot. Os arrives carrying the trappings of an unconventional expert — equal parts showman and eccentric loner — and his presence shifts the mood from quiet dread to something more unpredictable.

Os brings his own complications. Beneath the bravado of someone who claims to battle the supernatural lies a man grappling with personal turmoil, prone to excess and sudden outbursts that draw an uneasy line between him and his hosts. Dan, an artist accustomed to controlling the frame of his canvases, finds himself navigating a relationship that resists easy understanding, their conversations weaving between the strange and the unexpectedly intimate. Meanwhile, the cabin’s original disturbance seems to be only the surface of something far more unsettling, with each passing moment deepening the sense that the family has wandered into territory neither expertise nor intuition is equipped to handle.

Blending dark humor with creeping dread, the film settles into an atmosphere where the line between the rational and the otherworldly grows thin, and the arrival of an oddball exorcist might be only the first strange chapter in a much longer, more troubling story.

Spoilers ahead

The story follows the Papadakis family, who travel to a secluded cabin nestled in the woods. The primary purpose of the trip is to provide the father, Dan, with a quiet environment where he can focus on his paintings. However, their peaceful retreat is quickly interrupted when the family begins experiencing various supernatural phenomena. Disturbed by these events, they decide to seek professional help to rid their home of whatever spirits may be lingering there.

Their first attempt at a solution is hiring a laid-back individual named Joey. After assessing the situation, Joey confirms that the house is indeed haunted by two ghosts. However, he informs the family that there is no reason to be afraid or to attempt an exorcism, as the ghosts are benign and their actions were simply clumsy attempts to make contact with the living. Dissatisfied with this passive approach, Dan decides to take more drastic measures. On the recommendation of his friend George, who swears by the man’s effectiveness in exorcising spirits, Dan hires a demonologist named Os.

Dan decides to stay behind at the cabin with Os, only to discover that the demonologist is a deeply eccentric individual. Os is prone to periodic outbursts of rage and struggles with over-imbibing, much of which is fueled by the stress of his impending divorce. While Os’s erratic behavior frequently makes Dan feel uncomfortable, the two men eventually form a strange bond one evening after Os successfully captures one of the two ghosts. During this bonding moment, Os shares a bizarre personal tale about how he once contracted gonorrhea from the Devil, who had appeared to him in the guise of a beautiful woman. In return, Dan makes a candid confession regarding his art; he reveals that his paintings—which consist of a simple black circle in the center of a canvas—possess no deep or hidden meaning, despite the claims made by the public and critics.

As time passes, Os’s behavior becomes increasingly unbearable. In an attempt to end the arrangement, Dan deliberately lies, claiming that the remaining ghost has left the premises due to Os’s efforts. The two men celebrate this supposed victory by drinking aged canned wine. However, the truce is short-lived. The following day, Os insists that the second ghost has returned. When Dan admits he lied because of Os’s strange personality and bluntly states that they are not actually friends, Os is deeply hurt. This emotional shift leads Os to a delusional conclusion: he believes that Dan accidentally opened a portal to another realm, allowing a demon to enter and possess Dan’s son, Jazz.

Dan, completely unconvinced by this theory, demands that Os leave the cabin immediately. Instead of complying, Os knocks Dan unconscious and ties him up. While Dan is incapacitated, his wife, Mary, and their son, Jazz, arrive at the cabin, only to be captured and handcuffed by the demonologist. Os then begins a series of absurd attempts to exorcise Jazz, utilizing wind-up toys and cards featuring naked women. These methods leave Jazz utterly bewildered, as the boy insists he is not possessed by any entity.

Frustrated by his lack of progress, Os contacts a priest for professional advice. The priest advises him that the only way to stop the entity is to kill the demon residing inside the boy. Following this logic, and mirroring his previous habit of burying items to strip them of their power, Os decides to bury Jazz alive.

While left alone in the cabin, Mary and Dan witness a shocking sight: the ghost that Os claimed to have captured simply wanders into the room and drops the handcuff key. This revelation proves that Os was never actually capable of capturing or removing ghosts. Now liberated, Dan is able to overpower Os and rescue his son just as the police arrive on the scene. The ordeal concludes with Dan, Mary, and Jazz heading to the hospital for medical care, while Os is taken away to jail.
