Nathan Harper is an 18-year-old high-school senior living in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who carries the weight of troubling, recurring nightmares. To help him cope, he has been seeing a psychiatrist, Dr. Geraldine “Geri” Bennett, whose calm guidance provides a steady thread through a day-to-day life already crowded with mystery and fear.

On a school research project about missing children, Nathan teams up with Karen Murphy, and what begins as a routine assignment quickly takes a sharper turn. He learns that he bears a striking resemblance to an age-progression photo of a missing child named Steven Price. As he digs deeper, the lines between family and fate blur: his investigations reveal that he and his parents may be biologically unrelated. When he confronts his mother with what he’s uncovered, Mara confirms the unsettling truth, one that shakes the foundations of the life he thought he knew.

The truth erupts into violence when two men arrive at the Harper home, claiming to be from the Bridgewater Juvenile Justice Department. Mara fights back, but she is shot dead in the struggle, a fatal reminder of how quickly danger can close in. Kevin is killed as well, leaving Nathan with a shouted warning to run. He flees, but not before he returns for Karen, who is quickly captured. A frantic rescue ensues as Nathan frees her from danger and tries to uncover the identity of the men who invaded his home, only to be forced to flee again when a bomb explodes nearby.

Hospitalized after the blast, Karen receives care while Nathan tries to contact the authorities. His call is intercepted by CIA operative Frank Burton, who warns him that he is in grave danger and promises to send two more agents to retrieve him. Dr. Bennett quickly shifts from psychologist to ally, helping Karen and Nathan slip away. Burton fills in crucial, troubling backstory: Nathan’s biological father, Martin Price, stole an encrypted list of 25 corrupt CIA operatives from Nikola Kozlow when Nathan was three. Kozlow intends to abduct Nathan to force Martin to reveal the list. Nathan had already been placed with adoptive parents to protect him, and Kozlow used a website to present Nathan as the missing Steven Price, surgically weaving a dangerous tale designed to trap him. Bennett provides a safe-house address in Arlington, Virginia, and urges Nathan to trust only Martin and a man named Paul Rasmus. Burton’s own authority is put under strain when he learns that Bennett was a former CIA operative.

At the safe house, Nathan and Karen gather what they need: money, a gun, a photograph of Nathan’s biological mother, Lorna Price, and a cell phone. Karen tries to reach her family, but both the CIA and Kozlow’s operatives intercept the call, forcing the pair to flee once more. Their search leads them to the grave of Lorna Price; the address that was supposed to be a link to Lorna turns out to be a cemetery in which she rests. Fresh flowers indicate a mysterious sender, Paul Rasmus, who lives in Nebraska. With the help of a friend named Gilly, they hop a train—Amtrak—with fake IDs and begin to forge a path toward safety. On the journey, they grow closer, sharing a quiet moment and a kiss, all while they remain acutely aware that Kozlow’s right-hand man is trailing them, waiting for a chance to strike.

Burton and his agents close in, while Nathan reflects on the data Martin Price allegedly stole and wonders whether his own name might be on that list. The pursuit intensifies as Kozlow’s snipers strike. Nathan and Karen escape in a car, but Kozlow calls with a new threat: Karen’s parents will be harmed unless the list is handed over. Nathan arranges a dramatic confrontation at Pittsburgh’s home stadium, PNC Park, during a Pirates game. He enlists Gilly to obtain game tickets and a gun, hoping to force Kozlow into a final, dangerous exchange.

When Kozlow arrives, he taunts Nathan by recounting the moment he killed Nathan’s mother when she refused to disclose Martin’s location. The confrontation spirals into chaos as Kozlow wrests the gun from Nathan and aims to finish the standoff. Nathan bolts, pursued by Kozlow and CIA operatives alike. A critical call from Martin comes through, urging Nathan to trust him and run to the south parking lot. He does so, and Kozlow’s pursuit ends in tragedy: Martin shoots Kozlow, ending the immediate threat. Burton and his team scramble to recover the cell phone, but Martin’s warning to his superiors about Burton’s corruption comes to the fore, and the phone remains in Martin’s possession as Burton is taken into custody.

In the aftermath, Martin reaches out one final time to explain and apologize, though he refuses to reveal himself in person. He assures Nathan that no one will harm Karen or him, and then disappears. Bennett arrives with Karen and helps set the course for Nathan’s future, arranging for him to live with her for the time being while he decides what his life should become. The story closes with a sense of cautious new beginnings as Nathan and Karen share a moment of happiness on a date, stepping forward together into whatever comes next.
