Rosario grows up in a cramped apartment on the outskirts of Naples, cared for by his sick grandmother Liliana. The neighborhood is defined by confusion and crime, pulling him toward both bad and good influences. His days drift between crowded arcades, cheap sandwich shops, and petty theft.

Damiano, the Camorra's lure

Damiano appears as a dangerous, charismatic figure in the neighborhood, quickly catching Rosario's attention. Rosario sees him as a powerful role model who offers protection and status. Yet Damiano's world is built on exploitation and danger, pulling the boy toward crime.

Care and faith in tension

Rosario constantly moves between caring for his ailing grandmother and the temptations of street life. He still attends the local church and tries to cling to some sense of order. The contrast between Liliana's tenderness and the lure of Damiano's gang defines his every choice.

Shelter and Santino

Rosario begins to attend a shelter run by volunteers, hoping for a way out of the cycle of crime. Santino, a compassionate volunteer, becomes a positive role model and a glimmer of hope. The shelter offers support to struggling families and a possible path away from the street.

First love

At the shelter, Rosario meets Caterina and falls in love. He dares to imagine a better future for himself and others around him. But the weight of his environment and the pull of criminal life soon tests that hope.

Ringing risk on the ring road

Rosario and his friends engage in dangerous dares, including impromptu Russian roulette on the ring road. The ritual exposes how numb and reckless the city’s youth have become. Each session reinforces a sense that risk is normal and survival is precarious.

Petty crimes escalate

He begins to participate in petty crimes with Damiano's gang, drawing closer to organized crime. The thrill of quick money and the respect of peers override his better instincts. The line between protection and danger blurs.

Damiano's grip tightens

Damiano's influence tightens as Rosario becomes more deeply involved in the gang's schemes. He is drawn into more serious offenses and begins to lose sight of his grandmother's care and Caterina's affection. The allure of power within the Camorra eclipses the shelter’s influence.

A cascade of misfortunes

A string of negative events—violence, crime, and personal losses—pushes Rosario further into the criminal underworld. Friends and allies falter; trust erodes; his world narrows to the gang and the streets. The city’s harsh reality mirrors his spiraling path.

Turning toward organized crime

Rosario accepts that the Camorra offers a sense of belonging and a dangerous form of security. He begins to see organized crime as the only viable option for his future. The line between boy and criminal becomes increasingly indistinct.

Moral decay mirrors the city

The material decay of Naples’ city blocks mirrors the moral decay spreading through Rosario and his peers. The youth imitate the criminals around them, accepting violence as normal. The environment shapes every choice, eroding potential for change.
