Zacharias Kunuk, born on November 27, 1957 in Kapuiviit (Jens Munk Island) on Baffin Island, Nunavut, is a pioneering Canadian Inuk filmmaker whose work has reshaped the landscape of Indigenous cinema. Growing up in a remote Arctic community, Kunck — spelled Kunuk in English— learned to carve soapstone and sell his sculptures to buy movie tickets, an early indication of his lifelong devotion to visual storytelling; by his teenage years he was already photographing traditional Inuit hunting scenes with a borrowed camera. In 1981 he acquired a video camera and taught himself the technical craft of filmmaking, a self‑directed education that later enabled him to co‑found Igloolik Isuma Productions, Canada’s first independent Inuit production company, alongside Paul Qulitalik, Paul Apak Angilirq, and non‑Inuk partner Norman Cohn. Kunuk’s breakout masterpiece, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001), was the first Canadian dramatic feature film shot entirely in Inuktitut and starred an all‑Indigenous cast; the film not only garnered international acclaim but was later voted the greatest Canadian film of all time in the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival poll. His subsequent projects, such as The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006) – co‑written and co‑directed with Cohn – and documentaries like Sirmilik (2011), demonstrate a commitment to portraying Inuit history, culture, and contemporary challenges with authenticity and artistic rigor.
