Zabou Breitman, born Isabelle Breitman on 30 October 1959 in Paris, France, entered the world of French cinema almost before she could walk. The daughter of celebrated actors Jean‑Claude Deret and Céline Léger, she was immersed in theatrical tradition from infancy, and at the tender age of four she appeared in her first film, a cameo that foreshadowed a lifelong devotion to the screen. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s she honed her craft in theatre and television, quickly gaining a reputation for versatility and emotional depth. By 1981, her résumé already included dozens of roles across film, TV movies, and stage productions, allowing her to collaborate with some of France’s most respected directors. Her performances often balanced comedic timing with dramatic intensity, earning her critical praise and a devoted fan base. In 2000 she expanded her international presence by originating the role of Lucille Cadeau in the London premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s House & Garden at the National Theatre, showcasing her fluency in both French and English theatrical traditions. In 2001, Zabou transitioned behind the camera with her directorial debut Se souvenir des belles choses, a delicate exploration of memory and loss that won the César Award for Best Debut. The film’s success affirmed her talent as a storyteller and solidified her status as a multifaceted artist. She continued to direct, write, and act in projects that often examine personal identity and familial bonds, while also participating in cultural programs such as the 2012 Rendez‑vous en terre inconnue. Outside the spotlight, she shares a partnership with sculptor Fabien Chalon, with whom she has raised two children, Anna (born 1990) and Antonin (born 1993), balancing her creative pursuits with a vibrant family life.
