Yury Ivanovich Borisov is a Russian politician, former military strategist, and mathematician currently serving as the Director General of Roscosmos. Born on 31 December 1956 in Vyshny Volochyok, Borisov has a robust educational background. He graduated from the Kalinin Suvorov Military School in 1974 and the Radioelectronics Higher Command School in 1978. In the 1980s, he furthered his studies in mathematics at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Moscow State University, from which he graduated in 1985. His pursuits in the political and military landscape began in earnest in 1978 when he enlisted in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union. This service continued for 20 years, during which time Russia succeeded the Soviet Union as the nation's governing body. In 2007, Borisov was appointed Deputy Head of the Federal Agency on Industry, and by July 2008, he was serving as the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade. He later held the position of Russia's Military-Industrial Commissioner in March 2011. On 12 November 2012, Borisov was promoted to the position of Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for Defence and Space Industry from 2018 until 2022. Importantly, Borisov was also appointed as Deputy Prime Minister for Defence and Space Industry in Dmitry Medvedev's Second Cabinet. Following Medvedev's resignation in 2020, Borisov took on his current role as Director General of Roscosmos in 2022. Borisov's significant contributions have been recognized with the recipient of Order for Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR, 3rd. In addition, he was sanctioned by Canada under the Special Economic Measures Act in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine for Grave Breach of International Peace and Security.
