William P. Carleton (October 3, 1872 – April 6, 1947) was a distinguished silent film actor who carved out a notable career during the early decades of American cinema. Born in London, England, Carleton eventually crossed the Atlantic to pursue his acting ambitions in Hollywood, where he became a familiar face in the burgeoning film industry. He began his film career in 1919 with The Spark Divine, where he was billed as William Carleton, Jr., marking the start of a prolific period that would span 25 years and include 40 films. Throughout his career, Carleton frequently portrayed dignified characters such as judges, captains, colonels, senators, and wealthy capitalists, often lending his refined British bearing to roles that required an air of authority and sophistication. His ability to bring a sense of gravitas to supporting roles made him a sought-after character actor during the silent era and the early sound period.

Carleton's filmography showcases his versatility across various genres, from dramas to mysteries and serials. Some of his notable performances include The Copperhead (1920), The Flapper (1920), The Inside of the Cup (1921), and Domestic Relations (1922). As the film industry transitioned to talking pictures in the 1930s, Carleton adapted seamlessly, appearing in films such as Charlie Chan's Chance (1932), Les Misérables (1935), and The Bohemian Girl (1936). He also ventured into serials, appearing in The Adventures of Frank Merriwell (1936) and The Green Hornet Strikes Again! (1940). His final film role came in 1944 with Wilson, where he played a Senator. Personally, Carleton was briefly married to actress Toby Claude, with whom he divorced in 1903, and he was a distant cousin of Sir Guy Standing and other members of the Standing acting family. Tragically, Carleton's life was cut short on April 6, 1947, when he died in Hollywood, California, at the age of 74, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
