Waage Sandø (born 8 May 1943) is a versatile Danish performer whose career spans theatre, film, television and radio. Born in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen to a tavern‑owner family, he began formal training at the Private Theatre School between 1964 and 1966, laying a solid foundation for a lifetime on stage. After graduation he quickly entered the professional world, working at Aarhus Theatre from 1968 to 1970 while simultaneously directing the Open Air Theatre in Copenhagen (1968‑1973) and the Swale Hall in Aarhus (1970‑1975). His leadership abilities led him to positions at Det Danske Teater, Folketeatret and the TV‑Theatre as both actor and director between 1975 and 1977, and he later served as director of Odense Teater from 1977 to 1985 before becoming a freelance artist in Copenhagen. Since 1990 Sandø has maintained a permanent attachment to the Royal Danish Theatre, and in 1991 he returned to helm Det Danske Teater, reinforcing his influence on Denmark’s cultural scene. In film he is recognized for roles in Min fynske barndom (1994), Kun en pige (1995) and At kende sandheden (Facing the Truth, 2002), while television audiences know him from landmark series such as Landsbyen (1991‑1996), Rejseholdet (Unit One) and the critically acclaimed Krøniken (2003‑2006), where he portrayed director Kaj Holger Nielsen. Internationally, however, he reached a wider viewership through the political thriller Bedrag (Follow the Money), cementing his status as a distinguished actor capable of navigating complex characters across multiple media. Beyond his professional achievements, Sandø is married to an actress, a partnership that underscores his lifelong dedication to the performing arts.
