His early career as a film editor in the early 1930s coincided with the vibrant German and Austrian film industry, where he contributed to several notable productions including The Three from the Filling Station (1930), Der Kongreß tanzt (1931), and Storms of Passion (1932). These early editing credits demonstrated Gertler's technical proficiency and his ability to shape narrative through precise visual storytelling. Gertler's transition to directing began with Stolen Wednesday (1933), and over the following three decades, he helmed a remarkable body of work that explored various themes in Hungarian society. His directorial output includes a wide range of genres, from comedies like All Men Are Crazy (1937) and Gala Suit (1949) to historical dramas such as Catherine the Last (1936) and The Witch of Leanyvar (1938). Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Gertler continued directing films that resonated with Hungarian audiences, including Without Lies (1946), Honesty and Glory (1951), and Battle in Peace (1952). Some of his most well-known works from the 1950s include The State Department Store (1953), The Magic Chair (1954), and Me and My Grandfather (1954), showcasing his versatility across multiple narrative styles.
