Born in Tambov to a modest railway‑worker family, Vanand lost his father early and was placed in an orphanage in 1906, an experience that deeply influenced his empathetic portrayals of working‑class characters. He entered the professional theatre world in the early 1920s and, from 1924 to 1950, became a leading figure at the Mossovet Theatre, where he excelled both as a dramatic actor and as a director, shaping productions that combined Socialist Realist ideals with genuine human emotion.
