Ulrich Köhler was a pioneering German archaeologist whose scholarly career spanned the second half of the nineteenth century, leaving a lasting imprint on classical studies. Born on 6 November 1838 in the small town of Kleinneuhausen, then part of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach, he pursued his higher education at the University of Jena, where he cultivated a deep fascination with ancient Greek artifacts and epigraphy. In 1865 he secured a prestigious appointment as secretary of the Prussian embassy in Athens, a role that granted him direct access to the rich archaeological milieu of the Greek capital and allowed him to forge influential connections with leading scholars of the era. His reputation for meticulous research earned him a professorship in archaeology at the University of Strassburg, where he mentored a generation of students and promoted rigorous methodological standards. In 1875 he was named governor of the newly founded Archaeological Institute at Athens, overseeing excavations, publications, and the coordination of international research efforts. This period proved especially productive, culminating in his magisterial contribution to the Corpus inscriptionum Atticarum, the second volume of which (published between 1877 and 1895) catalogued and interpreted Athenian inscriptions from the archonship of Euclides through the Augustan era, providing indispensable primary sources for historians of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Köhler also authored Urkunden und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte des delisch‑attischen Bundes (1870), a detailed examination of the Delian League’s legal and political structures. In 1886 he returned to Germany as a professor of ancient history at the University of Berlin, where he continued to lecture, publish, and advise on archaeological policy until his death on 24 October 1903 in Berlin. Throughout his career, Köhler combined fieldwork experience with philological expertise, establishing a legacy of interdisciplinary scholarship that continues to inform modern classical archaeology.
