Tulsi Chakraborty, often credited as Tulsi Chakrabarti, stands as a towering figure in the golden age of Bengali cinema, renowned for his unparalleled contribution to the industry as both a gifted character actor and a comedian of extraordinary depth and realism. Born on 3 March 1899 in the modest village of Goari located in Howrah, Bengal Presidency, his early life was marked by constant movement due to his father Ashutosh Chakraborty's employment with the Indian Railways, which led young Tulsi to spend formative years in Calcutta under the care of his paternal uncle Prasad Chakraborty. His uncle, a accomplished tabla and harmonium player associated with the prestigious Star Theatre, provided Tulsi with invaluable exposure to the world of professional theatre, nurturing his dreams of becoming a singer-actor while he worked various odd jobs ranging from washing dishes in a humble North Calcutta eatery to performing as a circus clown in Burma.
