Tomasz Karolak, born 21 June 1971 in Radom, Poland, is a versatile Polish actor whose career has spanned more than two decades, moving fluidly between stage, screen, and even music. The son of Hanna and Andrzej Karolak—both officers in the Polish People’s Army—he grew up amidst a disciplined military environment before pursuing the arts, initially failing the theater school entrance exam in Warsaw and earning a degree in rehabilitation at the University of Warsaw. After persevering through multiple attempts, he finally entered Kraków’s National Theatre School, graduating in 1997, and embarked on a diverse professional path that included work as a salesman, builder, and even a bodyguard while studying. His early theatre work saw him performing at Kraków’s Julius Slovak and Scenes STU, as well as the New Theatre in Łódź, before moving to Warsaw’s Assembly Plant, National, Variety, and the Art Centre M25, where his talent earned him an award at the XXVIII Opole Theatre Confrontations for his role in The Water Hen.

Karolak’s transition to screen was marked by his debut in The Big Animal (2000) and a breakout television role as senior midshipman Szczepan Żałoda in the popular series Kryminalni (2004‑2007). He further cemented his fame with a charismatic performance in the sitcom 39 i pół, playing Darek Jankowski across three seasons. Beyond acting, he ventured into music, releasing the single “Just Be” in 2013 with lyrics by Paweł Kukiz, and founded his own theatre, Teatr IMKA, in 2010. Recognized for his public appeal, he served as a jury member on Jak oni śpiewają, won the Telekamera award for Best Actor, and received the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, illustrating a career marked by artistic diversity, public engagement, and critical acclaim.
