After a modest upbringing in Maplewood, New Jersey, she discovered a passion for performance after seeing Helen Hayes on stage in 1936, prompting her to pursue acting in school productions and later at the Wharf Theater in Provincetown. Discovered by Samuel Goldwyn while starring in Life with Father, she secured a five‑year contract that famously included unusual clauses protecting her dignity, such as refusing to pose in a bathing suit unless actually in water.
