Tandi Wright was born on 4 May 1970 in Zambia to New Zealand parents Vernon Wright, a former journalist, and Dinah Priestley, a writer and actress. Growing up in Wellington, she attended Wellington High School before enrolling at Victoria University of Wellington, and later honed her craft at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, earning a Diploma in Acting in 1994. Her family background is rich in creative and professional pursuits, with two sisters—Nicky, a DOC policy advisor, and Justine, a film editor—as well as two step‑sisters, Stephanie and Victoria, who work in information architecture and teaching respectively. Wright’s early exposure to performance and storytelling, combined with a solid academic foundation, set the stage for a versatile career in New Zealand’s television and film industry. She married fellow actor Michael Beran, and the couple lives in Auckland with their daughter, Olive, reflecting a personal life that balances family and artistic dedication. Her breakthrough came in 1995 when she was cast as Nurse Caroline Buxton on the iconic soap opera Shortland Street, a role she inhabited until 2000, earning her widespread recognition.

After Shortland Street, Wright showcased her range through a succession of memorable characters: the sharp‑witted Fenn Partington in Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby, the compassionate Dr Catherine Duvall in Nothing Trivial (2011–2014), and the determined Ruth in the film Pearl. She also appeared in popular series such as Power Rangers: S.P.D., Crash Palace, Out of the Blue, and Legend of the Seeker, and held a recurring role as Laura Turner in 800 Words. In 2010, she portrayed Callie Ross in This Is Not My Life, and in 2014 she starred as Claire Winship in the thriller The Returned. Beyond acting, Wright serves as vice‑president of Equity New Zealand, advocating for performers’ rights and shaping industry standards.
