Tancred Ibsen (11 July 1893 – 4 December 1978) was a multifaceted Norwegian figure whose life spanned military service, aviation pioneering, and a pioneering career in film direction. Born in Gausdal, Norway, he was the son of Sigurd Ibsen and Bergljot Bjørnson, making him the grandson of both the legendary playwright Henrik Ibsen and Nobel laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. This remarkable literary heritage undoubtedly influenced his artistic sensibilities and creative ambitions. In 1917, Ibsen began pilot training at Kjeller Airport and started his career in the Norwegian Army Air Service. Two years later, in 1919, he married dancer and actress Lillebil Ibsen, with whom he remained married until his death. In 1920, he established the first civilian active airplane company in Norway, A/S Aero, financed by his uncle Einar Bjørnson and two shipowners. As the head pilot, he conducted demonstration flights, advertising campaigns, and limited mail deliveries, while also chartering aircraft to the Det Norske Luftfartrederi routes in southern Norway. The activities of A/S Aero eventually ceased when the company was absorbed into the aircraft manufacturer A/S Norske Aeroplanfabrik in Tønsberg.

Ibsen's transition to cinema began after a transformative 1923 trip to New York, where he was captivated by a screening of D.W. Griffith's Orphans of the Storm. He subsequently spent two years in Los Angeles working at Metro Goldwyn Mayer as a handyman, electrician, and eventually in the script department. Returning to Norway, Ibsen made his directorial debut in 1931 with Den store barnedåpen, Norway's first feature-length sound film. Throughout the 1930s, alongside Leif Sinding, he dominated the Norwegian film industry by producing conventional melodramas modeled after classical Hollywood cinema. During World War II, he returned to active military service against Operation Weserübung in 1940 but continued filmmaking through 1942. He was arrested on 17 August 1943 by the Nazi occupation forces and imprisoned in Schildberg and later Luckenwalde until liberation. His controversial 1950 film To mistenkelige personer was famously banned by the Supreme Court of Norway due to privacy concerns, only being legalized and publicly released in 2007. Throughout his filmography spanning over three decades, Ibsen directed numerous notable works including Synnøve Solbakken (1934) and The Wild Duck (1963), the latter based on a play by his grandfather Henrik Ibsen. He passed away in Oslo at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy as one of Norway's most influential film directors.
