Taj Atwal is a British actress born on December 1, 1987, in Norwich, England, to an Indian family, and has established herself as a versatile performer across television, film, and theatre. Her early life was marked by significant challenges and determination; after her mother lost her job at the Rowntree's factory and was offered employment in York, Atwal relocated with her at approximately seven years of age, settling in the Haxby area where she participated in stage productions at Easingwold School. However, facing difficult circumstances during her teenage years, she was forced to leave her family home at the age of sixteen and spent two years living with volunteers from SASH (Safe and Sound Homes), a homeless charity that supports vulnerable young people. Despite these hardships, she pursued her education vigorously, attending York College from 2004 to 2007, where she earned distinctions in both a National Award in Dance and a National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting). Her talent was evident during her graduate production where she portrayed Anitra in Peer Gynt, and she subsequently secured funding through Dance and Drama Awards to train at the prestigious Guildford School of Acting, where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree and laid the foundation for her professional career.

She made her television impact in 2013 portraying Amani Sarin, a teacher suffering from alopecia due to stress who fabricates a cancer diagnosis, in the BBC anthology series Moving On. Her notable television credits include Jasminder in the Sky comedy Stella, Jasmin in the BBC drama In the Club, and the high-profile role of PC Tatleen Sohota in the fifth series of the critically acclaimed police procedural Line of Duty in 2019, though she notably chose to depart for The Syndicate rather than continue with the series. She has also appeared in Hullraisers, Death on the Tyne, Cold Call, and Van Der Valk. On stage, she has received acclaim for her performances as Meenah in East Is East (2014–2015) and Rita in the 2018 production of Rita, Sue and Bob Too.
