Susan Stroman is an American theatre director, choreographer, and performer whose career spans over five decades, beginning in the 1970s and continuing to the present day. Born on October 17, 1954 in Wilmington, Delaware, she grew up in a musical household; her father, a piano‑playing salesman, introduced her to show tunes, and she began studying jazz, tap, and ballet at the age of five under James Jamieson. After earning an English degree from the University of Delaware, Stroman moved to New York City in 1976, where her first professional gig was in Hit the Deck at the Goodspeed Opera House, followed quickly by a national tour of Chicago. Her breakthrough came in 1987 with the Off‑Broadway revival of Flora the Red Menace, catching the eye of legendary producer Hal Prince, who hired her for the New York City Opera production of Don Giovanni.
