Steve Franken (Stephen Robert Franken, May 27 1932 – August 24 2012) was an American actor whose career spanned more than five decades, encompassing film, television, voice‑over work, and even directing. Born in Queens, New York, Franken earned a B.A. from Cornell University before rejecting his parents’ hopes for a medical career and heading to New York to pursue acting. His first screen appearance came in 1958 as Willie on Playhouse 90, and he quickly attracted the attention of producer Rod Amateau, who cast him as the snobbish, ulcer‑inflicted playboy Chatsworth Osborne Jr. on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1960‑1963), a role that cemented his reputation for delivering witty, condescending humor. Over the next several years he accumulated a diverse array of guest spots— from a bully in The Rebel to a pompous villain’s son on Petticoat Junction—and appeared in notable episodes of Perry Mason, The Lieutenant (Gene Roddenberry’s first series), and Bewitched. His film work included the memorable drunken waiter Levinson in Blake Edwards’ cult classic The Party (1968), where his physical comedy rivaled that of Peter Sellers, and later roles in Disney’s The North Avenue Irregulars (1979) and The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (1980).
In the 1980s and beyond, Franken transitioned smoothly into voice acting, lending his talents to cartoons such as Road Rovers, Batman: The Animated Series, and Static Shock, as well as to video games in the Law & Order franchise. He continued to make guest appearances on contemporary series like Murphy Brown, The King of Queens, and Seinfeld well into the early 2000s. A devoted family man, he was married twice—to Julia E. Carter (1965‑1986) and later to Jean Garrett—fathering three daughters. Steve Franken passed away on August 24 2012 in Canoga Park, California, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances that delighted audiences across multiple generations.
