Stanisław Gronkowski was a distinguished Polish actor whose career spanned several decades during the post-war era of Polish cinema and theater. Born on January 8, 1922, in the city of Radom, Gronkowski became one of the notable figures associated with the theatrical community in Kraków, particularly performing at the Rhapsodic Theatre and the prestigious Old Theatre of Helena Modrzejewska. His artistic journey reflected the turbulent history of twentieth-century Poland, as he navigated his craft through significant political and cultural transformations in his homeland. Throughout his career, Gronkowski contributed to a diverse range of film productions, showcasing his versatility as a character actor. His film debut came in 1955 with Podhale w ogniu, where he portrayed a peasant. He went on to appear in numerous other films, including Wolne miasto (1958), Kalosze szczęścia (1958) — in which he notably portrayed Tadeusz Kościuszko — and Inspekcja pana Anatola (1959). His ability to embody various roles, from a phone receptionist to historical figures, demonstrated his range and dedication to the craft of acting. Among his most memorable performances were those in the beloved Polish television series Four Tank-men and a dog (1966–1970), where he played Kugel, and How I Unleashed World War II (1969), in which he portrayed the partisan character "Wilk." He also appeared in historical productions such as Racławice. 1794 (1979), once again taking on the role of Tadeusz Kościuszko, which suggested a particular affinity for embodying important figures from Polish history. In recognition of his contributions to Polish culture and the arts, Gronkowski was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (OOP) in 1989, a prestigious honor that acknowledged his lifetime of artistic achievement. His final film appearance came in 1989 with Nocny gość, where he portrayed a leper, bringing his screen career to a poignant close. Gronkowski passed away on May 20, 2004, in Kraków, the city that had served as the center of his theatrical life. He was laid to rest at the historic Salwator Cemetery in Kraków, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated character actor who enriched Polish cinema and theater during one of its most dynamic periods.
