Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono was an American singer, songwriter, actor, and politician whose career spanned more than three decades, beginning in the early 1960s and continuing until his untimely death in 1998. Born on February 16, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, he moved with his family to Inglewood, California at the age of seven and grew up in a working‑class Italian‑American household. His early ambition to enter the music business led him to drop out of Inglewood High School and work a series of odd jobs while writing songs, the first notable success being “Koko Joe” recorded by Don and Dewey when he was sixteen. In the early 1960s Bono secured a position at Specialty Records and later became a promotion man and percussionist for Phil Spector, co‑writing the hit “Needles and Pins” under a pseudonym. The breakthrough came in 1965 when he and his second wife, Cher, formed the duo Sonny & Cher, scoring a number‑one Billboard hit with “I Got You Babe” and spawning a string of follow‑up singles such as “The Beat Goes On” that cemented their place in pop culture. Beyond music, Bono ventured into television with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour (1971‑1974) and later starred in his own variety series, while also appearing in films ranging from Airplane II: The Sequel to John Waters’s Hairspray. His public persona transitioned to politics after a frustrating encounter with Palm Springs bureaucracy while opening a restaurant, prompting him to run for mayor and serve from 1988 to 1992, where he helped launch the Palm Springs International Film Festival. As a Republican, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 44th district in 1994 and was re‑elected in 1996, becoming the only member of Congress to have previously topped the Billboard Hot 100. During his congressional tenure he championed copyright reform, leading to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, and advocated for the environmental restoration of the Salton Sea. His life was cut short by a skiing accident on January 5, 1998, but his legacy endures in music, film, and legislation, with numerous memorials and a continued cultural footprint.
