Shay Duffin (born 26 February 1931 in Dublin, Ireland) was a prolific Irish character actor whose career spanned over three decades, encompassing stage, television, and film. Raised in a working‑class neighbourhood of Dublin, Duffin developed an early fascination with storytelling and the vibrant oral tradition of Irish folk culture, which later informed his distinctive performance style. After moving to the United Kingdom in the 1950s, he honed his craft in repertory theatres, where his knack for embodying eccentrically flawed personalities gained him a reputation as a reliable “second‑lead” who could steal scenes with subtle humor and pathos. By the mid‑1970s he transitioned to screen work, landing his first credited film appearance in 1976 and officially beginning the period listed as his years active (1976‑2007). Duffin’s most celebrated theatrical achievement came with the one‑man show Brendan Behan: Confessions of an Irish Rebel, a daring blend of biographical monologue and comedic riff that he not only performed but also wrote.
