Samira Makhmalbaf (born 15 February 1980 in Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian filmmaker and screenwriter who emerged from the legendary Makhmalbaf Film House, a family‑run workshop founded by her father, the celebrated director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. From an early age she was immersed in cinema, appearing as a child actor in her father's film The Cyclist at the age of seven and later assisting on set and in the editing room. She left formal schooling at fourteen to study filmmaking intensively for five years, a decision that set the stage for her debut feature La Pomme (The Apple), which she completed at seventeen and premiered at Cannes, subsequently touring more than one hundred international festivals and reaching audiences in over thirty countries. Her early success earned her the Sutherland Trophy at the London Film Festival in 1998 and positioned her as one of the youngest voices of the Iranian New Wave.

Throughout the 2000s Makhmalbaf continued to push artistic and political boundaries. She earned two Jury Prizes at Cannes for Blackboards (2001) and At Five in the Afternoon (2003), films that blend documentary realism with poetic metaphor to explore themes such as education, women's rights, and the lingering effects of war in Afghanistan and Iran. Her commitment to authenticity often placed her in danger; while shooting Two‑Legged Horse in Afghanistan, a hand‑grenade attack wounded six crew members and killed a horse, yet she persisted and completed the film, later winning accolades at Ghent, San Sebastián, and Tallinn. Makhmalbaf’s style is hallmarked by the use of non‑professional actors, street‑level realism, and a relentless focus on social justice, allowing her to portray poverty, oppression, and hope with both gritty honesty and lyrical imagination.
