Samuel John Bottoms (born October 17, 1955, in Santa Barbara, California) was an American actor and film producer whose career spanned over three decades, beginning in the early 1970s and concluding shortly before his untimely death in 2008. Born into an artistic family—his father James "Bud" Bottoms was a sculptor and art teacher, and his mother Betty Chapman supported his creative upbringing—Sam was the third of four brothers, all of whom pursued acting, most notably Timothy and Joseph Bottoms. His first break came at age sixteen when director Peter Bogdanovich, impressed by his presence on the set of The Last Picture Show, offered him a screen test that led to the role of Billy, a silent yet pivotal character in the film. Five years later, he appeared alongside Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales, solidifying his place in Hollywood's supporting‑actor cadre. Sam’s most iconic performance arrived in 1979 when he portrayed the charismatic surfer‑turned‑Navy Gunner’s Mate Lance B. Johnson in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Apocalypse Now, a role remembered for both its magnetic screen presence and the harrowing production conditions that left him with a serious hookworm infection. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he continued to work steadily in both film and television, appearing in East of Eden, Murder, She Wrote, The X‑Files, and NYPD Blue, while also stepping behind the camera to produce the documentary Picture This: The Times of Peter Bogdanovich in Archer City, Texas (1991). Sam married twice—first to Susan Arnold (1980‑1987) and later to Laura Bickford in 2002—and fathered two children. He succumbed to glioblastoma multiforme on December 16, 2008, at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy of memorable character work and a family that continues to honor his artistic contributions.
