Rudy Pankow (born August 12, 1997) is an American actor best recognized for his portrayal of JJ Maybank in the Netflix teen drama Outer Banks. Raised in the remote town of Ketchikan, Alaska, Pankow grew up alongside two brothers, an older sibling and a younger one, in a setting far removed from the traditional hubs of the entertainment industry. His first spark of interest in performance emerged during middle school, where he began experimenting with video creation on YouTube, an early indicator of his comfort in front of the camera. Determined to hone his craft, he completed his secondary education at Ketchikan High School before enrolling in the Michael Woolson Studio, a decision that redirected him from an initial contemplation of culinary school toward a professional acting career. After intensive training, he entered the world of live theatre, taking on roles in classic productions such as The Nutcracker, Mary Poppins, and Oliver Twist, experiences that broadened his stage presence and versatility. Pankow's breakthrough arrived in 2020 when he was cast as the charismatic and rebellious JJ Maybank in Outer Banks, a series that, while set in North Carolina’s coastal region, was filmed primarily in Charleston, South Carolina.
