Roger Michell was a British director whose work spanned theatre, television and cinema, earning him a reputation as one of the most versatile storytellers of his generation. Born on 5 June 1956 in Pretoria, he grew up in a diplomatic family and spent formative years in Beirut, Damascus and Prague, experiences that gave him a cosmopolitan outlook that would later inform his eclectic directing style. He attended Clifton College in Bristol where he first experimented with directing short plays, and later studied English at Queens’ College, Cambridge, winning the RSC Buzz Goodbody Award for Best Student Director and a Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe for his play Private Dick. After graduating in 1977 he moved to Brighton, worked at the Royal Court Theatre and later became a Resident Director with the Royal Shakespeare Company, directing a range of classical and contemporary works that earned critical acclaim. Michell’s transition to screen began with the BBC Directors’ Course, leading to the celebrated TV adaptation of The Buddha of Suburbia and the award‑winning 1995 film Persuasion, which won the BAFTA for Best Single Drama. His most commercial success came with the Richard Curtis‑scripted romantic comedy Notting Hill (1999), which became a box‑office phenomenon and cemented his status in mainstream cinema. He continued to collaborate with writer Hanif Kureishi on films such as The Mother (2003) and Venus (2006), and later explored diverse genres with Changing Lanes (2002), Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) and the documentary Le Week‑End (2013). In the 2010s he earned further BAFTAs for The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies and The Duke, while also directing critically praised documentaries like Nothing Like a Dame and Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts. Michell’s personal life included marriages to actress Kate Buffery and later Anna Maxwell Martin, with whom he had four children. He died of a heart attack on 22 September 2021 in Hitchin, leaving behind a legacy of bold, emotionally resonant storytelling across multiple media.
