He began his screen career in 1934, quickly appearing in a series of genre pictures such as Vers l'abîme (1934) and Le Golem (1936), displaying a charismatic presence that suited both adventure and drama. Over the next two decades he amassed a filmography of roughly thirty titles, working alongside prominent directors and sharing the screen with celebrated actors of the era. His most enduring role came in 1956 when Jean‑Pierre Melville cast him as the eponymous anti‑hero in Bob le flambeur, a film now regarded as a precursor to the French New Wave. Despite a relatively modest output, Duchesne’s performances were characterized by a blend of world‑weary bravado and a subtle vulnerability that resonated with post‑war audiences. He was also known for his brief marriage to actress Yvette Lebon, a union that placed him within the inner circles of Parisian film society.

The shadow of World II heavily tarnished Duchesne’s legacy. Historical accounts accuse him of collaborating with the German occupiers, even suggesting involvement with the Gestapo and participation in the torture of a Resistance member.
