Robert Guédiguian: Movies & Box Office

Robert Jules Guédiguian, born on December 3, 1953, is an esteemed French film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. He often features Ariane Ascaride and Jean-Pierre Darroussin in many of his films. As the son of a German mother and an Armenian father who immigrated to France in the early 20th century following the Armenian genocide, Guédiguian has a rich cultural background that influences his work. In 2006, he highlighted his paternal roots in his film, 'Le Voyage en Armenie.' Growing up with a working-class background, his father being a worker on the Marseille docks, Guédiguian developed a keen interest in addressing social and political themes. He was involved with the French Communist Party, before joining the Left Party in France in 2008. Akin to Marcel Pagnol and René Allio, he anchors his films on social reality, often featuring prominently local and regional landscapes like the city of Marseille and especially L'Estaque (north-west Marseille). An example of his deeply rooted work is 'Marius et Jeannette.' His 2011 film 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' was notable, premiering in the 'Un Certain Regard' section at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Guediguian has been married to actress Ariane Ascaride since 1975 and they have two daughters together, Valentine and Madeleine. In December 2023, amid the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, Guédiguian was one of the 50 filmmakers who signed an open letter demanding an end to civilian casualties and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor.
