Robert Freitag (born Robert Peter Freytag) was a distinguished Austrian‑Swiss actor and director whose career spanned more than six decades, marking him as one of the most versatile performers in German‑language theatre and cinema. Born on 7 April 1916 in Vienna, he was the son of Swiss opera singer Otto Freitag and received formal training at Vienna’s renowned Max Reinhardt Seminar, where he honed a classical technique that would later serve him well on both stage and screen. During the turbulent Nazi era he sought refuge in Switzerland, joining the Schauspielhaus Zürich where his talent quickly attracted attention, and his wartime experience with German émigrés profoundly shaped his artistic outlook. In 1945 he married German actress Maria Becker, who later obtained Swiss citizenship through the union, and together they became a formidable theatrical partnership that would extend well beyond their divorce in 1966. Their collaborative spirit gave rise to the Zürcher Schauspieltruppe in 1956, a travelling ensemble that brought innovative productions to audiences across German‑speaking Europe and the United States, with fellow actor Will Quadflieg contributing to its artistic direction. Freitag’s screen debut came in 1941, most notably in the title role of William Tell, and he continued to appear in a steady stream of films and television productions, demonstrating a remarkable adaptability from classical drama to contemporary media. He was a regular presence at the Salzburg Festival from 1949 onward, while also performing at prestigious venues such as the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and Hamburger Kammerspiele. Beyond acting, he directed several films and served as a part‑time administrator for his theatre company, illustrating his multifaceted contribution to the performing arts. In 1994 he published his autobiography Es wollt mir behagen, mit Lachen die Wahrheit zu sagen, offering candid reflections on a life lived on stage and screen. Even in his mid‑80s he remained active, appearing in the TV film Die Liebenden vom Alexanderplatz (2001), underscoring an enduring passion for his craft until his death in Munich on 8 July 2010. Throughout his long career he not only captivated audiences but also mentored younger artists, leaving a lasting legacy in European theatre and film.
