Robert Anthony McGowan, professionally known in the film industry as Anthony Mack, was an influential American screenwriter and director born on May 22, 1901, in Denver, Colorado. He occupies a unique place in cinematic history as the nephew of Robert F. McGowan, the senior director of the iconic Our Gang comedy short subjects series, and he carved out his own distinguished career working within this beloved franchise. To distinguish his contributions from those of his famous uncle, he adopted the pseudonym Anthony Mack, under which he served as a junior director for Our Gang from 1926 to 1930, helming numerous memorable entries including War Feathers, Boxing Gloves, and Shivering Shakespeare. His directorial style demonstrated a keen understanding of comedic timing and the ability to elicit natural performances from child actors, skills that served him well throughout his career in the Hal Roach Studios productions. Beyond his work behind the camera, McGowan made a brief but amusing on-screen appearance in the 1932 short Free Wheeling, where he received a playful blow from a boxing glove attached to the children's makeshift taxi, showcasing his willingness to participate in the physical comedy that defined the series.

Following his directorial work in the late 1920s, McGowan transitioned into screenwriting, becoming the co-writer for the Our Gang series during its Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer period from 1938 to 1944, contributing to dozens of scripts including Men in Fright, Football Romeo, and Dancing Romeo. In his personal life, he married Madeline Rosselle, the daughter of a choreographer, and together they raised two children, including their daughter Mickie McGowan, who later pursued her own successful career in the entertainment industry as a voice actor, casting agent, and ADR director. Tragically, McGowan's professional trajectory came to an abrupt halt during the Communist "witch hunt" era of the late 1940s, when he was blacklisted from Hollywood for his associations with blacklisted screenwriters. This unfortunate political persecution effectively ended his creative output and prevented him from working in the industry he loved. He died in Los Angeles, California, on June 20, 1955, at the age of 54, just five months after his uncle's passing, leaving behind a complex legacy defined by significant contributions to American comedy cinema despite the shadow that had fallen over his final years.
