Raimondo Van Riel (22 January 1881 – 9 May 1962) was a distinguished Italian actor whose career spanned over four decades during the golden age of European cinema. Born in Rome, the capital of Italy, he became one of the many talented performers who contributed to the rich tapestry of Italian and European silent films and early talkies. His earliest known work dates back to 1918 with the film Fiamma simbolica, marking the beginning of what would become a prolific career in cinema. Throughout the 1920s, Van Riel established himself as a versatile character actor, appearing in numerous Italian productions including Quo Vadis? (1924), where he played the role of Tigellinus, and The Fiery Cavalcade (1925). He also worked in international productions, particularly in German cinema, demonstrating his linguistic abilities and cross-cultural appeal during a period when European cinema was deeply interconnected. His filmography reflects the evolution of cinema from the silent era through the early sound period, with notable roles in films such as Beatrice Cenci (1926), The Golden Abyss (1927), and Escape from Hell (1928). He frequently portrayed complex characters ranging from villains and adventurers to authority figures and aristocrats, as seen in his roles in The Strange Case of Captain Ramper (1927) and Lorenzino de' Medici (1935), where he portrayed Benvenuto Cellini.
