Rafael Félix Rivelles Guillén was born on December 23, 1898, in El Cabañal, a small coastal town in the province of Valencia, Spain. Coming from a theatrical family, he was the son of renowned play actor José Rivelles and play actress Amparo Guillén, which naturally immersed him in the world of performing arts from an early age. His career in film began remarkably early, with his first appearance in the 1914 silent film Prueba trágica, establishing him as a promising talent in Spanish cinema. During the silent era and into the 1930s, he appeared in numerous Spanish films including La Mujer X (1931) and El Embrujo de Sevilla (1931).

During the 1930s, with the advent of talking films, Rivelles traveled to Hollywood to participate in Spanish-language versions of American films, though he eventually returned to Spain to continue his work. He became particularly celebrated for two iconic roles: the title role in Don Quijote de la Mancha and the Prior in the beloved film Marcelino pan y vino (1955). Throughout his extensive career, he demonstrated remarkable versatility, appearing in over 30 films ranging from dramatic roles to historical characters like Cardinal Richelieu in Cyrano et d'Artagnan (1964). In addition to his work in Spanish cinema, Rivelles also appeared in Italian productions during the 1940s, including Capitan Tempesta (1942) and Il Leone di Damasco (1942), showcasing his international appeal.

In addition to his film career, Rivelles was an accomplished theater actor, performing in numerous stage productions from 1923's El nido ajeno through 1964's Reinar después de morir. He married Rosa Fontana, who was his second wife, and together they had a daughter, Amparo Rivelles, who would become one of the most famous Spanish actresses of her generation. Rivelles passed away on December 3, 1971, in Madrid at the age of 72, and was laid to rest at the El Cabanyal Cemetery in Valencia alongside his father, José Rivelles, cementing his legacy as one of the most distinguished actors in Spanish film history.
