**Radu Muntean** (born 8 June 1971) is a Romanian film director and screenwriter recognised as a central figure of the Romanian New Wave. Growing up in central Bucharest, he attended the Vasile Alecsandri School Nr. 118 and later the prestigious Saint Sava High School, graduating in 1989. After a brief period of military service that was cut short by the Romanian Revolution, he enrolled at the Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film, where he directed three short films and earned his degree in 1994. Muntean quickly established himself in the advertising world, directing over 400 commercials since 1996 and accumulating more than 40 national and international awards across various advertising festivals, which honed his visual storytelling skills and sharpened his economical narrative style.

His feature‑film debut, *The Rage* (2002), earned the Best First Film award from the Romanian Filmmakers Union and Best Photography at the 2003 Transilvania International Film Festival, signalling his arrival on the cinematic stage. He followed with *The Paper Will Be Blue* (2006) and *Boogie* (2008), both emblematic of the Romanian New Wave’s realist aesthetic and thematic focus on personal histories within post‑communist society. *Tuesday, After Christmas* (2010) and *One Floor Below* (2015) further cemented his reputation, the latter being selected for the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, showcasing his ability to blend intimate character studies with broader social commentary.
