Born Raymond Gérard Payelle on 15 September 1898 in Paris, France, the artist known professionally as Philippe Hériat established himself as a multifaceted talent in French cultural life throughout the twentieth century. Initially pursuing a career in cinema, Hériat studied under the renowned film director René Clair and made his screen debut in 1920 during the silent film era. Over the subsequent fifteen years, he cultivated a substantial filmography, appearing in approximately twenty-five productions, frequently in supporting roles that nonetheless left indelible marks on cinematic history. His most notable screen appearance came in Abel Gance's monumental 1927 epic Napoléon, a masterpiece of the silent cinema, though he also collaborated with other significant directors of the period including Marcel L'Herbier and Max Ophüls. This early career in acting provided him with intimate knowledge of narrative structure and dramatic timing, which would later inform his literary endeavors. Beyond his performances in front of the camera, Hériat developed a keen understanding of visual storytelling that would prove invaluable when he eventually transitioned toward writing and screenplays.

Transitioning from acting to literature, Hériat achieved remarkable acclaim as a novelist and playwright, ultimately becoming one of the most decorated French writers of his generation. His literary career commenced with the publication of L'Innocent in 1931, which earned him the prestigious Prix Renaudot, establishing him as a serious literary voice. He cemented his reputation with Les Enfants gâtés (The Spoiled Children) in 1939, a novel complex enough to secure the Prix Goncourt, France's most celebrated literary award. This work formed part of his larger Boussardel saga, a multi-generational family chronicle that also included Famille Boussardel, which won the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française in 1947. His literary contributions extended to cinema when he collaborated with director Jean Delannoy to write the screenplay for Le Secret de Mayerling in 1949. That same year, Hériat was inducted into the Académie Goncourt, serving as a member until his death on 10 October 1971 in Paris. He rests in the historic Père Lachaise Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy that bridges the golden age of French silent cinema and the pinnacle of twentieth-century French literature.
