Peter Sellars is an American theatre director and professor whose work has reshaped contemporary opera and drama for more than four decades. Born on September 27, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended the prestigious Phillips Academy before enrolling at Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1980 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. During his Harvard years he staged inventive productions such as a swimming‑pool rendition of Antony and Cleopatra and a techno‑industrial King Lear that featured a Lincoln Continental onstage, signaling his lifelong commitment to blending high art with bold visual spectacle. After graduating, Sellars launched his career with a blaxploitation‑styled Don Giovanni in New Hampshire (1980) and a space‑set Orlando at the American Repertory Theatre, establishing a reputation for reimagining classic works in unexpected contexts. His early 1980s collaborations with Andy Warhol on a life‑sized animatronic robot and his tenure as director of the Boston Shakespeare Company further cemented his status as an avant‑garde innovator, earning him a MacArthur Fellowship in 1983.
