Peter Doherty (born 12 March 1979 in Hexham, Northumberland) is an English musician, singer‑songwriter and occasional actor whose career has been marked by both critical acclaim and a turbulent personal life. Raised in a military family, he spent his childhood moving between army bases across Britain and continental Europe, later studying English literature at Queen Mary before dropping out to pursue music. In 1997 he co‑founded the indie‑rock band The Libertines with Carl Barât, releasing the seminal debut Up the Bracket in 2002 and earning a devoted cult following for their raw lyricism and anarchic energy. Doherty’s lyrical themes often invoke the mythic name Albion, reflecting his fascination with British history and romantic literature, while his vocal style blends gritty punk with melodic folk influences. Despite his artistic successes, his career has been repeatedly interrupted by drug addiction, legal entanglements and several brief incarcerations, most famously a two‑month stint in 2003 after breaking into Barât’s flat and later a 14‑week prison term in 2008 for breaching probation.
