Peggy Evans was a distinguished English actress whose career spanned the golden age of British cinema. Born on 10 January 1921 in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, she was one of four children and grew up in Ealing, west London. As a teenager, her winning a creative writing contest earned her a screen test with the Rank Organization, which launched her career in the film industry. She trained at the prestigious Rank Organisation's The Company of Youth, often referred to as a charm school, which was known for developing young talent during that era. Evans began her film career with small roles in Lightning Conductor (1938) and Charley's (Big-Hearted) Aunt (1940) before entering the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for formal training. Her breakthrough role came in Penny and the Pownall Case (1948), where the Monthly Film Review praised her performance, describing her as a sparkling heroine, who not only looks extremely attractive but acts with naturalness and charm as well. She continued to build her reputation with a prominent role in The Blue Lamp, where she played the girlfriend of Dirk Bogarde's young mobster character. Beyond her work in cinema, Evans also appeared on stage, notably in the 1953 West End production of Four Winds. Her personal life included two marriages: first to actor Michael Howard from 1949 to 1956, a union that produced two children before ending in divorce, and later to Peter Stevens in 1990, with whom she remained until his death in 1997. In her later years, Evans learned Portuguese and spent part of each year living in the Algarve. She passed away on 26 July 2015 in England at the age of 94, survived by a son and a daughter, leaving behind a legacy as a talented performer of mid-twentieth-century British cinema.
