Paul Terry (July 30, 1887 – October 15, 1971) was an American cartoonist, screenwriter, film director and producer best known for founding the influential animation studio Terrytoons, which gave rise to iconic characters such as Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and Farmer Alfalfa. Born in Richfield, Utah, Terry began his career in the early 1900s working as a newspaper illustrator before moving into the burgeoning motion‑picture industry, where he quickly demonstrated a talent for merging comedic storytelling with visual innovation. In 1915 he joined the New York studio Bray Productions, gaining valuable experience that would later inform his own studio’s business model, which emphasized low‑cost, high‑output production techniques that allowed Terrytoons to thrive during both the silent and sound eras. By the late 1920s, Terry had established his own studio in New Rochelle, New York, and secured a distribution deal with Paramount Pictures, ensuring that his cartoons reached a nation‑wide audience. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Terry’s productions were notable for their economical animation style and the use of recurring gag formulas, which, while sometimes criticized by animation purists, proved popular with general audiences and helped sustain the studio through the Great Depression and World War II. Terry’s commitment to efficiency did not preclude artistic experimentation; under his leadership, Terrytoons ventured into experimental formats such as the early use of Technicolor and the incorporation of musical scores that enhanced the comedic timing of the shorts.
