Patrice Chéreau (2 November 1944 – 7 October 2013) was a French theatre and opera director, filmmaker, actor and television producer whose influence reshaped modern European performance art. Born in Lézigné, Maine‑et‑Loire, to painter Jean‑Baptiste Chéreau and graphic designer Marguerite Pelicier, he displayed a prodigious talent for set design at the age of twelve and was celebrated as a theatre prodigy by fifteen. While studying at the Sorbonne he abandoned academia to stage Victor Hugo’s L’Intervention and, in 1966, assumed the artistic directorship of the Public‑Theatre in Sartrouville, where he assembled a revolutionary creative team—designer Richard Peduzzi, costume designer Jacques Schmidt and lighting designer André Diot—that would accompany him throughout his career. His tenure at Sartrouville introduced an experimental blend of cinema, concerts, poetry and political debate, turning the municipal venue into a vibrant cultural hub. In 1976 Chéreau stunned the opera world with the Jahrhundertring at the Bayreuth Festival, a centenary production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen that placed the mythic drama in an industrial, capitalist context, sparking both controversy and acclaim and establishing a new paradigm for operatic staging. He later directed landmark productions such as Berg’s Lulu at the Paris Opera (1979), Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at La Scala (2007) and Strauss’s Elektra at the Aix‑en‑Provence Festival (2013). As a filmmaker, Chéreau earned international recognition for La Reine Margot (1994), Intimacy (2001) and His Brother (2003), winning awards including the Cannes Jury Prize and the Golden Bear in Berlin. Throughout his career he remained committed to exploring desire, societal power structures, and the raw human condition, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire directors across theatre, opera and cinema.
