Ola Isene was a distinguished Norwegian opera singer (baritone) and actor whose career spanned nearly half a century, leaving an indelible mark on both the operatic and theatrical landscapes of Scandinavia. Born on 2 June 1898 in the small Norwegian locality of Rødenes, Isene pursued his artistic education at the prestigious Musikkonservatoriet in Kristiania (now Oslo), where he honed the vocal and dramatic skills that would later define his multifaceted career. He made his professional debut at the Mayol-teatret in 1923, and over the following years, he cultivated a remarkably versatile repertoire that included iconic baritone roles such as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca, and Amonasro in Verdi's Aïda. Most of these operatic performances took place at the Nationaltheatret, Norway's premier stage, which during that era featured opera as a significant part of its programming alongside spoken drama. Isene was also a frequent touring artist, bringing his commanding vocal presence to audiences across the region, and he expanded his artistic range by appearing in operettas, including a notable role as Schubert in Jomfruburet.

In 1929, Isene achieved a unique distinction in cinema history when he sang Al Jolson's musical parts from The Jazz Singer when the groundbreaking film was presented in its silent film version in Sweden, showcasing his adaptability during the transitional era between silent and sound cinema. By the middle of the 1930s, Isene had transitioned more deliberately into theatre and film as an actor, embarking on a prolific screen career that would eventually encompass over two dozen film credits. His filmography includes notable Norwegian productions such as Tørres Snørtevold (1940), Trysil-Knut (1942), Den hemmelighetsfulle leiligheten (1948), Blodveien (1955), Hans Nielsen Hauge (1961), an adaptation of Ibsen's Vildanden (1963), and Balladen om mestertyven Ole Høiland (1970). He also ventured into Swedish cinema early in his acting career, appearing in Kärlek och landstorm (1931) and The Southsiders (1932). Beyond film, Isene made significant contributions to Norwegian radio drama, most memorably playing the title role in the three criminal radio plays Inspektør Scott på farten by John P. Wynn, which were broadcast by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 1960 and 1961. Personally, Isene was married from 1926 to Haldis Ingebjart Isene (1891–1978), herself a singer and voice teacher, and his family lineage continued into athletics through his brother Torbjørn, who was a great-grandfather to the famous Norwegian discus thrower Ola Stunes Isene. Ola Isene passed away on 6 May 1973, but his legacy as a pioneering operatic baritone and versatile screen actor remains an important chapter in Norwegian cultural history.
