He grew up in a bilingual military town where his parents, both English‑speaking teachers, deliberately kept the family away from French, shaping his early sense of outsider humor that would later surface in his jokes about cultural quirks. After brief stints studying mathematics, philosophy at Carleton University and journalism at Algonquin College, Macdonald began performing at Ottawa’s Yuk Yuk’s in 1985, quickly earning the Montreal Gazette’s praise as one of the country’s “hottest comics.” His break came in 1993 when he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and cast member, eventually anchoring the iconic Weekend Update segment for three and a half seasons, where his willingness to mock high‑profile figures such as O. J.
