Noriko Tatsumi (辰巳典子, Tatsumi Noriko; born October 12, 1947, in Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese actress renowned for her prominent role during the "First Wave" of Japanese pink films in the late 1960s. Born in the post-war era, Tatsumi emerged as a significant figure in the Japanese film industry during a time of cultural and cinematic transformation. She became known as the first "Queen" of Japanese softcore sex movies, a title she held from 1967 through 1970, distinguishing herself among her peers with her acting ability and screen presence. Her career began in 1967, with some debate over whether her debut was in Double Docking (a.k.a. Two Virgins) directed by Shintaro Kishi, or Muddy Uniform. Director Shintaro Kishi is generally credited with launching her career by casting her in the starring role of Double Docking, where she played a woman investigating her sister's disappearance by working in a nightclub, only to uncover an illicit prostitution ring. Tatsumi frequently collaborated with director Kōji Seki and actress Miki Hayashi throughout the late 1960s, appearing in productions from studios such as World Eiga and Nihon Cinema. Throughout her career, Tatsumi became associated with the higher-class productions within the pink film genre, which typically featured low budgets and sensationalistic themes. One of her most notable collaborations with Seki was the suspense thriller Whore (1967), in which she portrayed a woman plotting her husband's murder to claim a large inheritance. Another standout role came in director Atsushi Yamatoya's hallucinogenic film-noir-style satire Inflatable Sex Doll of the Wastelands (1967), which became one of the major cult films of the 1960s. In 1968, she received top billing among over 30 sex-film stars in Nikkatsu's Tokyo Bathhouse, a film described as featuring "such a smorgasbord of major sex stars populating one movie" that it would never be replicated. She also starred in controversial director Tetsuji Takechi's Ukiyo-e Cruel Story (1968), a film intended as a direct message to Eirin, the Japanese film-rating board. In 1969, she appeared in Erotic Culture Shock: Swapping Partners, further cementing her status as a leading actress of the era. Her performances, particularly in Mamoru Watanabe's Slave Widow (1967), earned her critical praise and solidified her legacy as a pioneering figure in Japanese cinema.
