Nir Bergman, born on 8 August 1969 in the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood of Haifa, Israel, emerged from a culturally rich upbringing in the artists' village of Ein Hod, where his early exposure to creativity foreshadowed a prolific cinematic career. After completing secondary education, he enrolled at the prestigious Sam Spiegel Film & Television School in 1993, where his talent quickly manifested through the short films Yomit (1997) and Seahorses (1998), the latter winning multiple international awards and being singled out by judges such as Paul Newman and Pedro Almodóvar as the best student film ever produced at the academy. Graduating in 1998, Bergman transitioned to television, penning the Channel 2 series Capture the Sky in 2000, before achieving his breakthrough with the feature film Broken Wings (2002), an expansion of Seahorses that explored the emotional turmoil of a fatherless family and earned the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival as well as nine Ophir Awards, including Best Director. Continuing his dual focus on screenwriting and direction, he created acclaimed TV series such as Jerusalem Mixed Grill (2003) and BeTipul (2005), the latter contributing to the acclaimed format later adapted internationally, while also serving as head of drama at Israel Channel 10. His subsequent films, including Intimate Grammar (2010), Yona (2014), Saving Netta (2017), and Here We Are (2020), consistently garnered festival honors, with the latter winning four Ophir Awards and a Cannes invitation before the event’s cancellation. In 2023, Bergman directed the comedy‑drama series Six Zeros, which secured the Israeli Film Academy Award and, as announced on 2 December 2024, was acquired by Netflix for distribution across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Demonstrating ongoing artistic vitality, he captured the Best Director prize at the 2024 Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn for his avant‑garde work Pink Lady, solidifying his status as a leading figure in contemporary Israeli cinema.
