Nikolai Kapitonovich Svobodin was a distinguished Soviet and Russian stage and film actor and theater pedagogue, born on 20 May 1898 in the village of Uzmorye, Novouzensky Uyezd, in the Samara Governorate of the Russian Empire. His birth name was Nikolai Kapitonovich Pechkin, and he later adopted the surname Svobodin, under which he became widely known in theatrical and cinematic circles. He dedicated his life to the arts, becoming a celebrated member of the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre in 1938, where he honed his craft and contributed to numerous productions. Beyond his acting career, Svobodin was deeply committed to the education of future generations of performers. He taught at the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts from 1934 to 1941, and later returned to academia at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography between 1963 and 1964. His filmography spans several decades and includes memorable roles in notable Soviet films, such as The Lonely White Sail (1937), Lenin in October (1937), and Lenin in 1918 (1939), where he portrayed Valerian Rutkovsky, a socialist revolutionary. Other significant performances include his role as Professor Sergei Fyodorovich Losev in The Court of Honor (1948), which earned him the Stalin Prize, 1st class in 1949, as well as appearances in The Great Glinka (1946), Secret Mission (1950), Przhevalsky (1951), and Admiral Ushakov (1953). Svobodin was honored with several prestigious awards during his lifetime, including the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1948, the Stalin Prize in 1949, and the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1954. He also received the Medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" and the Medal "In Commemoration of the 800th Anniversary of Moscow." He passed away on 20 September 1965 in Moscow at the age of 67, and was laid to rest in the historic Novodevichy Cemetery. His legacy endures through his contributions to Soviet cinema and theater, as well as through the generations of students he mentored.
