Nico Cristian Mirallegro, born on 26 January 1991 in Heywood, Greater Manchester, is an English actor of Italian and Irish descent. His father hails from Sicily while his mother, Maureen McLaughlin, originates from Malin Head, giving Nico a multicultural upbringing that includes conversational Italian and Spanish. After a brief, isolated stint at a boarding school abroad, he returned to Manchester where he attended Siddal Moor Sports College and later honed his craft at the Manchester School of Acting. Inspired by his sister Claudia, he stumbled into improvisation classes in his mid‑teens, famously admitting he was so frightened he needed a classmate to speak his lines for him. This raw, self‑aware start led to his breakthrough role in 2007 as the emo teen Barry “Newt” Newton on the long‑running soap Hollyoaks, where he learned the discipline of daily filming and earned a reputation for reliability on set. Over the next decade, Mirallegro diversified his portfolio, portraying Finn Nelson in My Mad Fat Diary, Joe Middleton in The Village, and the tragic Johnjo O’Shea in Common, each performance underscoring his ability to navigate complex emotional landscapes. His film work includes a memorable turn as a teenage guitarist in Spike Island and a leading role in Peterloo, while his stage presence shone at the Royal Court Theatre in The Pass.
