Nelly Mazloum was a remarkable Egyptian dancer, choreographer, and teacher whose career spanned more than six decades, from her debut as a child prodigy in the late 1930s to her death in Athens in 2003. Born on 9 June 1929 in Alexandria to an Italian jeweller father from Naples and a Greek pianist mother from Asia Minor, she overcame early poliomyelitis, regaining the use of her legs under the care of a pediatrician and his ballet‑teacher wife, an experience that ignited her lifelong passion for movement. At the age of five she began performing solo, and by ten she had appeared in the Greek‑language film “I prosfygopoula” (1939), quickly becoming a media‑celebrated child star who entertained royalty, including King Farouk, alongside legendary dancers such as Samia Gamal and Tahiya Karioka. In 1948 she was appointed prima ballerina of the Royal Opera House in Cairo, and from 1959 to 1964 she served as choreographer of the National Theatre, shaping modern Egyptian stage dance. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s she acted in about seventeen films, notable among them Shahrazad (1941) and Soliman's Ring (1946), and she founded a prestigious ballet school for elite girls in 1947, training future generations for the National Opera. Mazloum’s most influential contribution was the creation of a folkloric dance company in the mid‑1950s that transformed Egypt’s traditional village dances into a dramatized artistic form, popularizing the “Raqs el Ta'Biry” style and introducing the refined “Hawanem” genre. Her troupe performed at the Cotton Fair Festival in 1958, earned a silver medal at the Helsinki International Youth Festival in 1961, and toured Egypt with the floating theatre Masrah al Ayem, reaching audiences from urban centers to remote villages. Political shifts in the 1960s forced her exile; she relocated to Greece, where she established the Athens International Dance School, adopted the name Nelly M. Calvo, and continued teaching ballet, modern, and Oriental dance. From 1985 until her death, she refined her own Nelly Mazloum Oriental Dance Technique, incorporating postural awareness, the Vivicorporeal Psychosomatic Alignment Method, and pharaonic dance research, and she authored a seminal book published in 1992. In 2001 she co‑founded the Mediterranean Archaic Dance Research Institute (MADRI) with her daughter Marianna, ensuring the preservation of ancient Mediterranean dance traditions. Her vibrant personality, humor, and dedication made her seminars across Europe legendary, influencing countless dancers and teachers worldwide. Nelly Mazloum passed away on 21 February 2003 in Athens, leaving a legacy that endures through her publications, her institute, and the many artists she inspired.
