Nanette Burstein: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Nanette Burstein, born on May 23, 1970, is a distinguished American film and television director. She has produced, directed, and co-directed several prominent documentaries, including the Academy Award nominated and Sundance Special Jury Prize winning film On the Ropes. Burstein studied film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. In 1997, she collaborated on her first film with Brett Morgen, producing and directing On the Ropes, a low-budget documentary that follows the lives of three young boxers and their trainer. This film gathered numerous accolades, including the Directors Guild of America's award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary. It was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award (“Truer than Fiction” award). In 2002, she teamed up again with Morgen for the Robert Evans biography The Kid Stays in the Picture which won the International Press Academy and Boston Society of Film Critics award for Best Documentary. Burstein produced Film School, a documentary television show, for IFC with Jordan Roberts in 2004. Her documentary 'American Teen' was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. For this project, Burstein lived in Warsaw, Indiana for 10 months, filming daily. Burstein is also a co-owner of the Manhattan bar, The Half-King, with Scott Anderson, and Sebastian Junger.
